Fifteen Days from Chicago to Los Angeles along America’s Legendary Mother Road
Follow the legendary Mother Road from Chicago to Los Angeles on the ultimate American fly-drive vacation.
Route 66 was established in 1926 and once carried travellers more than 2,400 miles between the Midwest and Southern California. Although it was officially removed from the United States Highway System in 1985, large sections survive as historic roads, scenic byways and main streets through communities that continue to celebrate its remarkable heritage.
Begin with two nights in Chicago before collecting your rental car and heading west. Travel through Illinois farmland to St. Louis, cross the Missouri Ozarks and follow the route’s brief passage through Kansas into Oklahoma.
Continue across the Texas Panhandle to New Mexico, where adobe architecture, Indigenous cultures and dramatic desert landscapes create a completely different atmosphere. Visit Santa Fe, Albuquerque, Gallup and the colourful landscapes of Petrified Forest National Park.
In Arizona, stand on the rim of the Grand Canyon and experience some of Route 66’s best-preserved communities, including Williams, Seligman and Kingman.
The final stages cross the Mojave Desert through Oatman, Needles, Amboy and Barstow before entering Greater Los Angeles. Complete your journey at Santa Monica Pier, the celebrated western end of Route 66.
