From Denver through Rocky Mountain National Park, Steamboat Springs, Aspen and Breckenridge
Colorado is made for road trips. This route takes you from Denver up into some of the highest, most dramatic mountain scenery in North America — winding passes, wide-open valleys, and towns that feel like they were built for people who love the outdoors. You'll cross Rocky Mountain National Park, where elk graze beside the road and the peaks seem close enough to touch, before heading west through ranch country to the laid-back cowboy town of Steamboat Springs.
From Steamboat the road leads south to Aspen — yes, it's glamorous, but it's also genuinely beautiful, sitting in a valley ringed by fourteeners with a walkable downtown full of great food and galleries. Then it's east over the mountains to Breckenridge, one of Colorado's most likeable ski towns, just as good in summer when the wildflowers take over the hillsides and the hiking trails open up. The whole route is best driven between June and October, when the high passes are clear and the scenery is at its finest.
This is very much a drive-at-your-own-pace trip. You set the schedule — linger over a coffee in a mountain town, pull over for a photo, or take a detour up a dirt road just to see what's there. Colorado rewards that kind of curiosity, and every stretch of this route gives you a reason to slow down and look around.
